American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) is seeking a qualified candidate to lead and manage AWEA’s public affairs efforts to deliver on AWEA advocacy objectives, to communicate AWEA’s mission, priorities, and value and to grow wind energy’s brand. This senior staff position reports to the SVP, Government & Public Affairs and works with AWEA leadership and member committees.


Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

• Work with AWEA-member Committees and the AWEA Board of Directors to develop and execute a communications strategy that delivers on advocacy objectives; clearly communicates AWEA’s mission; and promotes a positive brand for wind.
• Actively manage and lead PA staff and resources to ensure timely, coordinated, cost-effective, successful execution of PA strategies and achievement of objectives.
• Develop and drive the communications and grassroots/grasstops components of AWEA’s issue-based advocacy campaigns.
• Oversee identification, recruitment, and retention of stakeholders and stakeholder groups to whom AWEA’s messages should be directed and manage segmentation and message delivery.
• Oversee and participate in execution of all facets of public affairs functions including: short and long-term planning for all campaigns, outreach, publications, speeches, news releases, paid media, opinion media, grassroots, rapid response, etc. Ensure proper oversight and compliance for AWEA paid media efforts.
• Improve AWEA influence and reach by helping to establish AWEA CEO and senior GPA team as thought-leaders. Assist with presentations, talking points, etc.
• Develop strategic partnerships and alliances to amplify AWEA message through media coordination, co-branding, etc.
• Develop tools to assist member companies and partners including: crisis communication guidance; rapid response; message amplification; media outreach (e.g. for groundbreakings); and communications handbook.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Qualified candidates must possess: exceptional written and oral communication skills; the ability to plan, lead and execute work, balancing numerous and frequently shifting priorities; the ability to understand and operate in politically sensitive environments; to work in a collaborative, team environment; and to manage and develop staff. Qualified candidates must also have experience executing issue advocacy campaigns and possess an extensive network of contacts including: media, vendors, and potential allies.


Education and/or Experience

Preferred qualifications are a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications, public relations, advertising or a related field.
