IFIC, a Washington, DC nonprofit association specializing in nutrition and food safety research and communications seeks a Manager, Media Communications. IFIC brings together, works with, and provides information to consumers, health and nutrition professionals, educators, government officials, and food, beverage, and agricultural industry professionals. IFIC has established partnerships with a wide range of professional organizations, government agencies, and academic institutions to advance public understanding of key issues in nutrition, health and food safety through consumer research and education initiatives. IFIC is primarily funded by the food, beverage, and agriculture industry. IFIC does not endorse brands, products or accept advertising, and does not advocate for legislation or regulations.

This position will be responsible for Media Engagement, Content Management, Execution and Campaigns and Monitoring/Reporting on impressions and engagement. Key requirements include strong written and editorial skills, superior interpersonal and communication skills, experience with social media platforms, ability to work independently and with moderate level of direction, ability to understand complex scientific information and translate into clear language, 2-3 years’ experience in public relations, journalism, or communications, college degree with a background in journalism/communications/public relations.

Media engagement
• Coordinate timely responses to media inquiries and requests for information
• Draft and distribute content (such as press releases) to reporters, and pitch other general IFIC Foundation projects
• Support social media engagement
• Establish and build relationships with targeted journalists and media organizations

Content management
• Content planning and brainstorming
• Assist with social media copy
• Design, edit, and publish content to website

Content execution and campaigns
• Coordinate project-specific campaigns for key programs, special projects, and initiatives
• Build and maintain topic-specific media lists
• Update and build internal expert database

• Create monthly reports on traditional impressions and engagement
• Daily monitoring and snap-shot report of trending news (related to IFIC’s work) on traditional media
• Contribute to monthly social media reporting

Perform other duties as assigned
• Miscellaneous – Only when tasks above are completed and time allows
-- Write ~1 article/month
-- Creative (i.e.: infographics, videos, memes)

Background Required:

• 2-3 years’ experience in public relations, journalism, or communications
• Strong written and editorial skills
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Experience with social media platforms
• Ability to work independently and with moderate levels of direction
• Ability to understand complex scientific information and translate into clear language
• College degree, with a background in journalism/communications/public relations
