National Executive Director

Position Summary

We are looking for a passionate and highly motivated National Executive Director. The Executive Director is the key management leader of the Navy League of the United States, a 501(c)(3) organization, to include its related for profit building assets (headquarters building, parking garage and condo association). Under the leadership of the National President/CEO of the Navy League of the United States, the Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the execution of the daily administration of the staff, programs and execution of the strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include, but are not limited to, fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the National President.

General Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Carrying out the policies of the Navy League under the direction of the National President of the Navy League.
• Responsibility and authority for the day-to-day HQ administration of the Navy League, including the management of staff and financial affairs (budget preparation, monthly reporting and execution), Navy League publications, and execution of contracts, under the supervision and direction of the National President. Additionally, work with board and staff resources to ensure the missions are fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach.
• After consulting with the National President, obtain the advice, counsel, and recommendations of the Staff Compensation/Personnel Policy Committee, with respect to compensation for staff billets and personnel policies.
• Supporting the National Vice Presidents and National Treasurer in the execution of their programs and financial responsibilities. Disseminate critical information in a timely manner to NLUS officers so they can function effectively and make informed decision.
• Vision, strategy, and oversight of For Profit building ownership.
• At the direction and in the absence of the National President, serve as the Navy League’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media and the general public.
• Provide mentor and career guidance to staff employees to ensure the organization continues to grow to meet increasing mission needs.

Professional Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree and CAE is desired.
• Connection with the Sea Services is desired (Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines).
• Transparent philosophy and high integrity leadership.
• 5-10 years of non-profit management experience and other business experience.
• Experience in leading a senior staff of professionals.
• Solid and engaged budget and finance management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, reporting, fiscally prudent decision-making and execution.
• Strong organizational abilities including resource management, planning, delegating, program development, marketing and communication skills and efficient task facilitation.
• Ability to lead in a volunteer run organization, reporting to the National President.
• Fundraising experience and knowledge of fundraising strategies.
• Understanding commercial real estate leasing, facility maintenance and capital planning.
• Skills and ability to collaborate with and motivate staff and volunteers.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups up to and including Senior Military leadership, Congressional members and staffs, and C-level executives.
• Strong public speaking ability.

Preferred Skills and Experience
• Quick thinking, and ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.
• Knowledge of the military protocol is preferred.
