About MoveOn

MoveOn.org is a community of millions of members working together to create progressive change in America. We take on campaigns to challenge entrenched power and push back against right-wing policies, while pursuing economic, racial, and social justice. For 18 years, the MoveOn family of organizations have pioneered online tools to lower the barriers to individual and collective participation in our democracy, so real Americans have a voice in a political process where big money and corporate lobbyists wield too much influence. In the Trump era, we're growing to meet unprecedented challenges, as we work to block Trump and GOP policy priorities, stand with front-line communities, defend key norms and institutions of our democracy, and (speaking solely for MoveOn PAC) prepare to retake power in future elections.

Our MoveOn family is made up of two different entities. MoveOn.org Civic Action, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, focuses on education and advocacy, driving powerful campaigns that engage a mass public and building the progressive movement by encouraging and supporting the development of more grassroots leaders. MoveOn.org Political Action, a federal PAC, is focused on demonstrating MoveOn members’ power at the ballot box and electing candidates who reflect MoveOn members’ values.

Development Director

MoveOn is seeking a senior-level Development Director to expand and build out an already-healthy major donor, middle donor and foundation program. MoveOn’s large donor fundraising, initiated in 2015, complements the small donor base that was the organization’s exclusive source of income for many years and remains the strong majority of MoveOn’s income. The large donor program has quickly become an important additional asset to help MoveOn meet the escalating challenges of this historical moment, raising more than $5 million in less than a year and a half while complying with the highest levels of transparency and reporting. The Development Director will help lead the next phase of growth as we expand the Development team and deepen our work in this area.

The Development Director will help hire and lead a three-person team including a dedicated gift officer and an administrator/prospect researcher. The team will build on MoveOn’s current momentum to identify and steward relationships with generous supporters; meet ambitious goals for gifts; and guide a long-term vision for major donor fundraising at MoveOn. The Development Director will work closely with our executive directors and program teams to identify and create impactful and engaging campaigns for progressive change, and communicate those campaigns to potential supporters.

With hundreds of thousands of current donors, and top-flight data/analytics capacity and communications programs already in place, this is a unique and remarkable context for innovative, high-integrity development work to enhance MoveOn members’ power and impact. The ideal person for this role will be a creative leader and development professional with an entrepreneurial streak, an ability to chart development strategy in close consultation with organizational principals and program leads, and significant experience fundraising for political campaigns and/or 501(c)4 organizations. This is a relatively new initiative, and the successful candidate will be excited to strengthen and expand upon a strong new program. MoveOn does not accept funding from corporations or from government entities, and prioritizes support from members. The Development Director will be a key leader within the organization, and will help drive the expansion MoveOn’s funding base and network of supporters.

Responsibilities:

Execute and lead an annual fundraising plan for major donors, middle donors, foundations and bequests
Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with leadership-level major donors and prospects, and secure significant financial support from individuals and foundations
Guide a long-term organizational vision for a large sustained base of annual individual donors
Supervise the MoveOn Development Team, including two other staff (who will be hired with final input from the Development Director) and a number of key contracted vendors, and manage the department budget
Develop funding proposals with key program and campaign staff
Continue to build the infrastructure of MoveOn's new development program, including the donor database, gift processing, donor research, reporting, donor cultivation/engagement activities, and special events as needed

Required Experience:

Proven success in fundraising for political campaigns, large nonprofits or membership organizations, with a demonstrated ability to lead ambitious and innovative development campaigns that generate significant donations from individuals and foundations
Experience in planning, leading, and managing fundraising programs, including working collaboratively with others to reach common goals, and reporting on progress to senior managers
Strong management, team building and supervisory experience. Able to recruit talent; hold staff accountable; demonstrate leadership; provide (and receive) feedback; and be an excellent listener and coach.

Skills, Characteristics, and Values:

Able to navigate complex donor environments with judgment, sound strategic thinking, and tactical skill
Proficient in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising, and able to present materials to external audiences in a credible and persuasive way
Excellent political understanding, and ability to collaborate effectively with campaigners and program staff
Self-directed, motivated, and able to execute independently at a high level
Superb interpersonal skills, including the ability to generate respect and trust from colleagues and external constituents
Top-notch project management skills and attention to detail, and the ability to establish strategies and tactics based on data
Thrives in a fast-paced, quick-reaction work environment. Able to work with a high degree of collaboration, flexibility, and good cheer
Deep experience working with diverse constituencies, and commitment to expanding the diversity of MoveOn’s base of members and supporters
Able to be effective in an organization whose staff all work remotely
A belief in the power of grassroots organizing, and a natural affinity for an organization whose primary orientation is to serve a base of millions of progressive-minded members
We seek candidates whose strong integrity, humility, and discretion will match our culture
